The final project for the class is a 1000-word critical review of a book, film, or other cultural work. Students examined how one key issue was presented in that work as the thesis of the paper. This was followed up by a presentation to the class of the key elements of their review, supplemented by slides. Selected presentations can be viewed here.
People’s Choice class awards:
Edysa Frias chose to review the film Five and focused her research on the presentation of breast cancer in the film.
Albert Pereira examined what it means to be a superhero, looking at how the character of Superman is dealt with in this summer’s Man of Steel film.
Alex Salas examined the roles of women in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
Jia Wu did an analysis of the effects of racism on the community as seen in Harper Lee’s classic To Kill a Mockingbird.
